ChainThang

Quick Chain Cleaning Tool – User Guide

The ChainThang is designed to provide a quick and convenient way to clean your bicycle chain after a ride. Regularly removing dirt and grit from your chain helps extend the life of your drivetrain components and keeps your bike running smoothly.

The ChainThang is intended for routine cleaning and maintenance, not for deep drivetrain cleaning. For heavily contaminated chains, a full drivetrain cleaning process may still be required.

Important Usage Notes

  • Do NOT use acetone or other harsh chemicals with the ChainThang.

  • Avoid prolonged exposure to strong solvents or aggressive degreasers.

  • Do not leave the ChainThang soaking in chain cleaner, as this may degrade the plastic components.

For general cleaning, a mild degreaser such as Simple Green or similar bike-safe cleaners works well.

Standard Chain Cleaning (Using Degreaser)

  1. Apply Cleaner
Spray the brushes of the ChainThang with a chain cleaner or degreaser.

  2. Install on Chain
Place the ChainThang over the bicycle chain.

  3. Clean the Chain
Slowly spin the cranks while the ChainThang is in place so the brushes scrub the chain.
Reposition the ChainThang as needed and repeat until the chain is clean.

  4. Dry and Re-Lubricate
Wipe the chain with a clean, dry rag to remove excess cleaner.
    Apply your preferred chain lubricant.

For Waxed Chains

If you use waxed chains, do not apply chain cleaner to the brushes.

  1. Place the ChainThang over the chain.

  2. Spin the cranks to allow the dry brushes to remove dust and debris.

No lubrication is needed unless you choose to apply a light touch of drip wax.

Brush Replacement

The ChainThang uses replaceable brush heads, which can easily be swapped out when worn.

Compatible replacement brushes can be found at many dollar stores or online retailers.

Recommended brush size:
1.25 in × 0.5 in (31.75 mm × 12.7 mm)

To Replace the Brushes

  1. Clip off the toothbrush handle if necessary.

  2. Remove the three screws on the ChainThang housing.

  3. Remove and discard the old brush heads.

  4. Install the new brush heads in the same orientation.

  5. Reinstall and tighten the screws.
